About this tea

Yunnan Gold (Dian Hong) represents the pinnacle of Chinese black tea craftsmanship from Yunnan Province, China's most ancient tea-growing region. First produced in 1939, this relatively modern tea quickly gained recognition for its distinctive appearance - abundant golden buds that give the dry leaf a beautiful bi-colored appearance of black and gold.

Yunnan's unique conditions - high altitude, mild climate, and ancient tea trees (some over 1,000 years old) - produce leaves exceptionally rich in flavor compounds. The tea is made from the larger-leafed Yunnan varietals of Camellia sinensis, which contribute to its full body and natural sweetness. The highest grades, sometimes called Yunnan Pure Gold, consist entirely of golden buds and are among China's most expensive teas.

The flavor profile is remarkably smooth and naturally sweet, with no astringency. Notes of malt, honey, peppery spice, and sweet potato are common, with premium grades showing additional complexity - floral undertones, smooth chocolate notes, and a lingering sweet finish. The liquor is bright amber-gold with a silky texture that coats the mouth pleasantly.

Brewing recommendations: Use 1 teaspoon (3g) per 250ml cup with water at 93°C (200°F) and steep for 3 minutes. This tea performs exceptionally well gongfu style with multiple short infusions. Never add milk as it masks the tea's natural sweetness and complexity.

Ideal for afternoon enjoyment or as a dessert tea due to its natural sweetness. Pairs wonderfully with honey pastries, nuts, mild cheeses, and chocolate. Many tea enthusiasts consider Yunnan Gold the perfect 'gateway tea' for those transitioning from flavored to pure teas due to its approachable, naturally sweet character.
