About this tea
Taiping Houkui stands as one of China's most visually striking teas, with individual leaves reaching 5-7 cm - the largest of any famous Chinese tea. From Taiping County in Anhui Province's Huangshan region, this tea's name means 'Peaceful Monkey Leader,' referencing local legends of monkeys harvesting tea from cliff-side gardens. Its unique appearance and labor-intensive production make it one of China's most prestigious and expensive green teas.
The distinctive processing creates Taiping Houkui's signature appearance: only the terminal bud with two large leaves is plucked, requiring precise timing when leaves reach optimal size. After brief withering and pan-firing, each leaf set is individually laid between screens and pressed, creating the characteristic flat, straight form with visible leaf veining patterns. This individual attention means workers process only 500g-1kg daily.
The flavor profile is uniquely elegant: pronounced orchid fragrance that perfumes the entire room, sweet, mellow taste with no trace of astringency, thick, almost oily texture coating the mouth, and subtle complexity revealing floral, vegetal, and mineral notes. The large leaves release flavor slowly, creating a gentle, sustained experience rather than intense burst. Often described as 'drinking flower nectar' due to its orchid character. The pale green liquor has exceptional clarity.
Brewing recommendations: Use tall glass to appreciate the dramatic leaves standing upright like green soldiers. Use 3-5 leaf sets (3g) per 250ml with water at 80°C (175°F), pouring water down side of glass to avoid breaking delicate leaves. Steep 2 minutes, watching leaves slowly sink and 'dance.' Yields 3-4 infusions with remarkable consistency. Chinese connoisseurs often eat the tender leaves after brewing.
Best savored slowly in contemplative settings where its subtle beauty can be fully appreciated. The visual drama makes it perfect for impressing guests. Pairs with light, elegant foods that won't overwhelm its delicate character - white fish, mild dim sum, or enjoyed alone. The high price and limited production make it a special occasion tea. Authentic Taiping Houkui from the original production area commands premium prices - beware inferior imitations with broken, poorly pressed leaves.
