About this tea
Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is a natural hybrid of spearmint and watermint, first cultivated in England in the late 17th century. This sterile hybrid propagates only through runners, making every peppermint plant a clone. Ancient Greeks and Romans crowned themselves with mint at feasts, while medieval monks grew it for medicine. Today, the Pacific Northwest produces most of the world's peppermint.
Harvesting occurs just before flowering when essential oil content peaks. The leaves are cut in morning after dew dries, then quickly dried to preserve the volatile menthol (30-50%), menthone, and other compounds that create peppermint's signature cooling sensation. Quality peppermint shows whole, vibrant green leaves with intense aroma. Oregon and Washington peppermints are particularly prized for their high menthol content.
The flavor profile is intensely refreshing: an immediate cooling sensation floods the mouth, followed by sweet undertones and a clean, crisp finish. The menthol creates a unique thermal illusion, making the mouth feel cold. High-quality peppermint lacks grassiness or bitterness, instead offering pure, sweet mintiness. The clear, pale green-gold liquor releases aromatic vapors that clear sinuses even before sipping.
Brewing recommendations: Use 1 teaspoon (2g) per 250ml cup with boiling water (100°C/212°F) and steep for 6 minutes. Cover while steeping to trap essential oils. Can be enjoyed hot or iced - for iced tea, brew double strength and pour over ice. Never add milk, which dulls the refreshing qualities.
Excellent after meals for digestive support - clinically proven to relax digestive muscles and reduce IBS symptoms. The menthol also opens airways, making it helpful for congestion. Pairs wonderfully with chocolate desserts, fresh fruit, and Middle Eastern cuisine. Avoid before bedtime as it can be stimulating. Safe for children but use less for young ones as menthol can be intense.
